Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of self-rising flour
  • About a cup of buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup of shortening
  • A pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour, shortening, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Pour in about a cup of buttermilk.
  3. Mix the ingredients until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix; you want the dough to be just combined.
  4. On a floured surface, turn out the dough.
  5. Gently pat or roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  6. Using a round biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out the biscuits.
  7. Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet.
  8. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  9. Bake the biscuits for about 10 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
  10. Once out of the oven, brush the biscuits with melted butter for extra flavor and a beautiful shine.
  11. Enjoy your delicious homemade buttermilk biscuits while they’re still warm.

  1. Have never used buttermilk for gravy and make nearly every weekend.
Use sausage or bacon grease, never measure flour just adjust as stirring amount of oil determines amount of flour needed never stop stirring add 2 cups regular milk then cooking until combined.

Made since could reach top of gmas wood stove so about 5 back then.
