- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 4 cups hot water
- 6 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Nutmeg for garnish
Preparation:
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat the oven to 325°F.
- Prepare Milk Mixture:
- In a large glass or metal bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk with hot water.
- Prepare Egg Mixture:
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until they become light in color and fluffy in texture. To temper the eggs, pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, then combine them fully. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
- Assemble and Bake:
- Pour the combined mixture into ramekins or use a 2-quart baking dish.
- Place the ramekins or dish on a baking pan with high sides. Add water to the pan, filling it to about half an inch.
- Baking Time:
- Bake for approximately 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If using a larger baking dish, bake for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Cooling and Serving:
- Allow the custard to cool for about 1 hour.
- Sprinkle the custard with nutmeg before serving. It can be served warm or refrigerated to serve chilled.
