Description

Tender potatoes, onions & seasoned beef patties baked in rich milk gravy, topped with melted cheddar. Hearty, old-fashioned comfort food—simple and family-friendly!

Ingredients

Scale
  • lbs ground beef

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 cups milk, divided

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

1. Prepare the Meat Patties

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Form the mixture into 6 hamburger patties.

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the patties for 2–3 minutes per side. Do not fully cook through. Remove and set aside.

2. Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet (with drippings), whisk together 1 cup of milk and flour until smooth.

  • Gradually whisk in the remaining 1 cup milk.

  • Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy.

  • Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.

3. Assemble the Casserole

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Layer half of the potato slices in the bottom of the dish.

  • Add half of the onion slices over the potatoes.

  • Place the browned patties evenly over the onions.

  • Top with the remaining potatoes and onions.

  • Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the entire dish.

4. Bake the Dish

  • Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour.

  • Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top, and bake uncovered for 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.

  • Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • This dish is best served hot and fresh out of the oven.

  • Leftovers reheat beautifully and make an easy lunch the next day.

  • Ideal for potlucks, family dinners, or make-ahead meal prep.
