Ingredients
-
1 (16 oz) can refrigerated buttermilk biscuits, halved
-
1 lb ground breakfast sausage
-
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon black pepper
-
2 ½ cups whole milk
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
Step 2: Par-Bake the Biscuits
-
Cut each biscuit in half.
-
Arrange half the biscuit halves evenly across the bottom of the dish.
-
Bake for 10 minutes, just until lightly golden.
Step 3: Brown the Sausage
-
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until fully browned and crumbled.
-
Do not drain unless excess grease remains.
Step 4: Make the Sausage Gravy
-
Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir to coat.
-
Cook for 2–3 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
-
Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
-
Add salt and black pepper, and continue to simmer until the mixture thickens (about 5 minutes).
Step 5: Assemble the Casserole
-
Pour the hot sausage gravy evenly over the pre-baked biscuits in the dish.
-
Top with the remaining biscuit halves.
Step 6: Final Bake
-
Return the dish to the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until biscuits on top are golden and the casserole is bubbling.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
-
Let the casserole cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing.
-
Serve warm with a sprinkle of fresh herbs, if desired.
