-
1 tbsp vanilla extract
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
-
½ tsp ground nutmeg
-
Pinch of salt
-
½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
-
Maple syrup and powdered sugar
Instructions
Step 1: Assemble the Base
-
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
-
Spread cubed French bread evenly in the dish.
-
Distribute banana slices evenly over the bread.
Step 2: Make the Custard
-
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
-
Pour the custard evenly over the bread and bananas.
-
Press down lightly with a spatula to help the bread absorb the liquid.
-
Sprinkle chopped nuts on top, if using.
Step 3: Refrigerate Overnight
-
Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil.
-
Refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 4: Bake to Perfection
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Remove the casserole from the fridge and let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
-
Uncover and bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
-
Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
-
Let the casserole sit for 10 minutes after baking to firm up before slicing.
-
Garnish with extra banana slices, powdered sugar, or a drizzle of maple syrup for an irresistible finish.
-
Make it festive by adding a pinch of clove or allspice during the holidays!
