Sloppy Joe Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/3 green bell pepper, minced
  • 1/2 large yellow onion, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 2/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 3/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • A dash of hot sauce (optional)
  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Brown the Beef:
    • In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-medium-high heat.
    • Add the ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes, breaking it into crumbles until it’s nicely browned. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  2. Cook the Vegetables:
    • In the same skillet, add the minced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes until they are softened.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until it becomes fragrant.
  3. Combine Ingredients:
    • Return the drained beef to the skillet.
    • Stir in the tomato paste until well incorporated.
  4. Add Flavorings and Simmer:
    • Mix in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, red pepper flakes (if using), black pepper, and hot sauce (if desired).
    • Stir the mixture well to ensure all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  5. Thicken the Sloppy Joe Mixture:
    • Continue to cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until the mixture has thickened to your preference.
  6. Serve:
    • Toast the hamburger buns if desired for extra texture and warmth.
    • Spoon the thickened Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns.
    • Cap with the top halves of the buns, and serve hot.
