Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water (can use 2 cups of milk if preferred), warm (not hot)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 packet (10g) yeast
Directions:
- In a bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk and 1 cup of warm water. If you prefer, you can use 2 cups of milk.
- Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the milk-water mixture.
- Add one 10g packet of yeast to the mixture. Stir and set it aside for 10 minutes to activate the yeast.
- In another bowl, sift 6 cups of flour and add 1 teaspoon of salt.
- In the yeast mixture, add a quarter cup of oil and 1 egg. Mix these ingredients together.
- Gradually add the sifted flour to the yeast mixture and mix well to form a sticky dough.
- Add a heaped tablespoon of butter or margarine to the dough.
- Knead the dough for about 15 to 20 minutes. It will become less sticky as you knead.
- Rub the dough and the bowl with oil, then cover it. Let it rise for 45 minutes.
- After the dough has risen, press it flat and make golf ball-sized buns. Place them in a buttered baking dish.
- Cover the buns and leave them to rise for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Prepare an egg wash by mixing some egg and milk.
- Brush the risen buns with the egg wash.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and cooked through.
- When done, remove the buns from the oven and rub some butter on top of them for added flavor.
- Enjoy your freshly baked soft buns! This recipe yields approximately 24 buns from a double batch.
