Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours and 20 minutes
Yields: Approximately 24 buns (from a double batch)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup water (can use 2 cups of milk if preferred), warm (not hot)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet (10g) yeast

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk and 1 cup of warm water. If you prefer, you can use 2 cups of milk.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the milk-water mixture.
  3. Add one 10g packet of yeast to the mixture. Stir and set it aside for 10 minutes to activate the yeast.
  4. In another bowl, sift 6 cups of flour and add 1 teaspoon of salt.
  5. In the yeast mixture, add a quarter cup of oil and 1 egg. Mix these ingredients together.
  6. Gradually add the sifted flour to the yeast mixture and mix well to form a sticky dough.
  7. Add a heaped tablespoon of butter or margarine to the dough.
  8. Knead the dough for about 15 to 20 minutes. It will become less sticky as you knead.
  9. Rub the dough and the bowl with oil, then cover it. Let it rise for 45 minutes.
  10. After the dough has risen, press it flat and make golf ball-sized buns. Place them in a buttered baking dish.
  11. Cover the buns and leave them to rise for about 30 minutes.
  12. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  13. Prepare an egg wash by mixing some egg and milk.
  14. Brush the risen buns with the egg wash.
  15. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and cooked through.
  16. When done, remove the buns from the oven and rub some butter on top of them for added flavor.
  17. Enjoy your freshly baked soft buns! This recipe yields approximately 24 buns from a double batch.
