Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • oven-safe skillet
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Oven

Method

  1. In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and set aside.
  3. Brown the patties in an oven-safe skillet for 3–4 minutes per side, then remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions in butter. Add flour and stir for 2 minutes, then whisk in beef broth and cream.
  5. Nestle patties into the gravy. Cover tightly and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
  6. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use an 80/20 beef blend for the juiciest patties. Letting the dish rest before serving helps the gravy thicken beautifully.
