Ingredients

  • 3 apples (peeled and sliced)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (chilled)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar (to taste)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Rolling pin
  • cookie cutter or round mold
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, mix sliced apples with lemon juice, sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water.
  2. Cream chilled butter in another bowl; add flour, salt, and sugar until crumbly. Gradually mix in ice water to form dough.
  3. Roll out half the dough on a floured surface and cut into circles.
  4. Place apple filling and caramel in each circle's center. Fold over and seal edges.
  5. Arrange on a baking sheet; brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For extra texture, sprinkle coarse sugar on top before baking. You can drizzle more caramel after baking for a bakery-style finish. Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
