Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed tomato soup
  • 1 bag (32 oz) frozen tater tots
  • as needed cooking spray (for greasing dish)

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Baking dish (9×13-inch)
  • Spatula
  • Mixing spoon
  • oven mitts

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened.
  3. Season the beef mixture with salt and black pepper, then transfer it to the prepared baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the beef mixture.
  5. Pour the condensed tomato soup over the cheese layer, spreading it out with a spatula.
  6. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the tomato soup layer.
  7. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

For a flavor twist, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce to the beef mixture. You can substitute ground turkey for a lighter option or mix in diced bell peppers for extra color and sweetness. Leftovers reheat well in the oven or air fryer.
