Ingredients

  • 5 cups shredded cooked chicken
  • 9 oz deli-style turkey ham or smoked turkey cut into strips (pork-free substitute)
  • 8 oz Swiss cheese slices
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice optional, freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • chopped parsley optional garnish

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Spread the shredded chicken evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Layer the turkey ham or smoked turkey evenly over the chicken, followed by the Swiss cheese slices.
  4. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 6 tablespoons butter. Whisk in Dijon mustard, lemon juice (if using), garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper.
  5. Whisk in the flour and cook until a smooth paste forms.
  6. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly, until smooth. Simmer for about 4 minutes until thickened.
  7. Pour the sauce evenly over the casserole, spreading gently to cover all layers.
  8. Mix the panko breadcrumbs with the softened butter and sprinkle evenly over the top.
  9. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, until bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
  10. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

This casserole is a pork-free take on classic Chicken Cordon Bleu. Smoked turkey adds a similar savory flavor while keeping the dish family-friendly.
