Ingredients

Casserole
  • 1/2 cup milk whole milk works best for creaminess
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp soy sauce adds depth without overpowering
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup Campbell’s preferred
  • 4 cups green beans fresh, frozen, or canned; thaw if frozen
Topping
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions reserve 1/3 cup for topping

Method

  1. If using frozen green beans, thaw and drain. For fresh, trim and cut into 2-inch pieces and blanch briefly. Canned beans should be drained well.
  2. Preheat oven or air fryer to 350°F. Measure and divide the fried onions: 2/3 cup for mixing and 1/3 cup reserved for topping.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, and soy sauce until smooth.
  4. Add the green beans, 2/3 cup fried onions, and black pepper. Gently fold until evenly combined.
  5. Transfer mixture to a 9×9-inch baking dish and bake for 25 minutes (or 10 minutes in an air fryer) until bubbling around the edges.
  6. Stir gently, then top with the reserved fried onions. Bake an additional 5 minutes (2 minutes in an air fryer) until the topping is golden and crisp.

Notes

For added flavor, consider mixing in sautéed mushrooms or a pinch of garlic powder. To keep it vegetarian, ensure your fried onions do not contain animal-derived ingredients.
