Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 20 small red or gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 4 strips bacon, chopped (Turkey Bacon Used)
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups skim milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp dry mustard powder
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • salt and black pepper, to taste
  • green onions, sliced (optional garnish)

Equipment

  • oven-safe skillet Cast iron recommended
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cook chopped bacon in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving drippings in the pan.
  3. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook in the bacon drippings. Season with mustard powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until no longer pink.
  4. Push beef to one side of the skillet. Layer sliced potatoes and beef alternately, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
  5. Pour milk evenly over the skillet and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden. Bake an additional 10–15 minutes if excess liquid remains.
  7. Let rest for a few minutes, then top with crispy bacon and green onions before serving.

Notes

Use thinly sliced potatoes so they cook evenly. If the skillet seems too liquidy near the end, bake uncovered a bit longer. Cast iron works best but any oven-safe skillet will do.
