  • 1 lb extra lean ground beef
  • 0.5 cup diced onion
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup seasoned Italian bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 package (4 oz) garlic-flavored instant mashed potatoes
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese blend
  • 0.25 cup real bacon bits

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Boil water and milk in a saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in mashed potato powder. Set aside.
  3. Mix ground beef, onions, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl using your hands.
  4. Add bread crumbs and egg, mixing thoroughly.
  5. Press meat mixture evenly into an 8-inch square baking dish.
  6. Spread mashed potatoes over the meat.
  7. Sprinkle with shredded cheese and bacon bits.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  10. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

Try topping with green onions for extra freshness. You can swap cheddar blend with mozzarella for a gooier finish. For a lighter option, use ground turkey instead of beef.
