Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons real maple syrup or 1 tsp maple extract (for glaze)
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk, as needed for consistency (for glaze)
  • 1 pinch salt (for glaze)

Equipment

  • 9x9-inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Hand or stand mixer
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula
  • Wire cooling rack
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×9-inch or 8×8-inch baking pan.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  3. Add eggs, vanilla, and maple extract. Mix well until smooth and combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. While cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and salt until smooth. Spread or drizzle over cooled bars.

Notes

For an extra maple kick, drizzle with additional pure maple syrup before serving or sprinkle with crushed pecans. Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
