Ingredients

  • 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix
  • 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup sour cream or buttermilk
  • ¾ cup brewed coffee, cooled
  • 2 cups Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (about ½ bag)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Equipment

  • 9-inch or similar cake pan
  • Large and medium mixing bowls
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small saucepan
  • Spatula or knife for spreading frosting

Method

  1. Preheat & Prep:Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients:In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake mix and instant pudding mix until evenly combined.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients:In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, vanilla, vegetable oil, sour cream (or buttermilk), and cooled coffee until smooth.
  4. Create Batter:Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture. Stir gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Add Chocolate Chips:Fold in the Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips for melty bursts of chocolate.
  6. Bake:Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool:Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack or serving plate.
  8. Prepare Ganache Frosting:In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Whisk in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and glossy. Stir in walnuts if desired.
  9. Frost the Cake:Pour the warm ganache over the cooled cake and spread evenly with a spatula.
  10. Serve:Enjoy immediately for a gooey treat or reheat slices gently before serving for warm indulgence.

Notes

  • Ensure eggs are at room temperature for best mixing results.
  • Avoid overbaking to maintain moistness.
