Ingredients

Patty Melts
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 large Onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices Rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  • Butter for grilling
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Secret Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce Ensure alcohol-free if needed.

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and Worcestershire sauce to make the secret sauce. Set aside.
  2. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, 15–20 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Divide ground beef into 4 portions and form thin patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices butter-side down on a skillet or griddle.
  6. Top each slice with Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and a second bread slice, butter-side up.
  7. Cook sandwiches for 2–3 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and cheese melted.
  8. Remove, let rest for a minute, slice, and serve with the secret sauce.

Notes

For extra flavor, toast the rye bread lightly before assembling, or add sautéed mushrooms to the onions for a deeper, savory taste.
