Ingredients

  • For the Filling
  • 6 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp salted caramel sauce
  • For the Crumble Topping
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 0.5 cup rolled oats

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Whisk
  • pastry blender or fork
  • Spatula or spoon
  • oven mitts

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and drizzle with salted caramel sauce.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble topping. Whisk to combine.
  5. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in the rolled oats until just combined.
  7. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  8. Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor balance. Granny Smith and Honeycrisp work beautifully together. Add chopped pecans to the topping for a nutty twist, and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
